Trine

A trine is a 120° aspect between two planets, creating harmony and ease in the areas they rule.

A trine is an astrological aspect formed when two planets are approximately 120 degrees apart (with an orb of up to 8°). It is considered a major harmonious aspect, often associated with ease, natural talent, and effortless expression. In a natal chart, trines indicate areas where energy flows smoothly, requiring little conscious effort to manifest.

How it works

In a birth chart, a trine connects planets that share the same element (fire, earth, air, or water). For example, a trine between the Sun in Aries (fire) and Jupiter in Leo (fire) amplifies confidence and creativity. The orb for a trine is typically 6–8°, but some astrologers use a tighter 5° for personal planets. Trines are marked on a chart wheel as solid blue lines (or green, depending on the software). They show innate gifts and supportive circumstances, but can also lead to complacency if over-relied upon.

In practice

When interpreting a trine, focus on the planets and houses involved. A trine between Venus in Taurus (2nd house) and Moon in Capricorn (10th house) might indicate natural financial savvy and a talent for building public reputation through emotional stability. Trines often highlight what comes easily to you—but they don't push you to grow. In a reading, trines are areas where you can rely on your strengths, yet they may need activation to avoid taking them for granted.
