Vedic Astrology
Vedic Astrology, or Jyotish, is an ancient Indian system that uses sidereal zodiac and lunar mansions for chart interpretation.
Vedic Astrology, also known as Jyotish (the "science of light"), is a traditional Hindu system of astrology that originated in ancient India. Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac (based on the seasons), Vedic Astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which aligns with the actual positions of constellations in the sky. This means the zodiac signs shift about 24 degrees relative to the tropical system, so your Sun sign in Vedic may differ from your Western one.
How it works
A Vedic birth chart (called a kundali) is a square diagram divided into 12 houses, each representing different life areas. The chart is calculated using your exact birth time, date, and place. Key features include:
- Nakshatras: 27 lunar mansions that the Moon transits through, each with unique qualities and deities.
- Planetary periods (dashas): A predictive system that divides your life into periods ruled by different planets, influencing major life events.
- Aspects: Planets aspect specific houses based on their sign placement (e.g., all planets aspect the 7th house from themselves).
- Yogas: Special planetary combinations that indicate specific talents or challenges.
In practice
When reading a Vedic chart, astrologers first assess the strength of the ascendant (Lagna), the Moon, and the Sun. The Moon's nakshatra is especially important for understanding your emotional nature and life path. Dashas are used to time events: for example, if you are in a Venus dasha, themes of love, beauty, and finances may be prominent. Vedic Astrology is often used for matchmaking (compatibility), career guidance, and spiritual growth.
To explore your own Vedic chart, you can generate a sidereal birth chart on Astraly.
