Western Astrology

Western astrology is a symbolic system based on the tropical zodiac, interpreting planetary positions relative to Earth.

Western astrology is a system of interpretation that maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the moment of your birth onto a circular chart divided into twelve signs and twelve houses. Unlike sidereal astrology (used in Vedic traditions), Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which aligns the signs with the seasons rather than fixed constellations. The starting point is the March equinox (0° Aries), making it a seasonal, Earth-centered system.

How it works

In a natal chart, the planets are placed in signs and houses based on your birth date, time, and location. The Sun sign (the sign the Sun was in) is what most people know as their zodiac sign, but the Moon, rising sign (Ascendant), and other planets each add layers. Aspects — angles between planets — show how these energies interact. For example, a trine (120°) suggests ease, while a square (90°) indicates tension. Western astrology also uses the Ascendant (rising sign) and Midheaven (MC) to describe outward personality and life direction.

In practice

When reading a Western chart, start with the Big Three: Sun (core identity), Moon (emotions), and Ascendant (outer self). Then look at the ruling planet of your Ascendant and its house placement. Notice any planets in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) — they tend to be more prominent. Pay attention to aspects: a tight conjunction (0°) between Venus and Mars, for instance, often shows a passionate, creative blend. Western astrology is flexible; you can use it for self-reflection, relationship dynamics (synastry), or timing events through transits.
